How to spot a real clearance deal
Clearance sections are full of red badges promising 50%, 60%, even 70% off. Some of those are the best prices a piece of gear will ever see. Others are discounts on items that were never going to sell at full price. A few minutes of checking tells them apart.
1. Look at the price range, not just the badge
Many clearance listings show a range, such as "$29.83 to $150.00", with a badge like "up to 80% off". That top discount usually applies to one color or one size. Pick the exact size and color you want and see what the price is for that version before deciding it's a deal.
2. Check how many sizes are left
Deep discounts often mean a nearly sold-out size run. If only XS and XXL remain, the deal is only a deal for a few people. When your size is still available on a heavily discounted item, that's a signal to move quickly; those are the listings that disappear first.
3. Read the reviews, and how many there are
A 4.6-star rating from 300 reviews tells you far more than a 5-star rating from one. Clearance is where retailers move products that didn't catch on, so a thin or mixed review history deserves a second look. Pay attention to comments about sizing: fit problems are a common reason gear ends up marked down.
4. Know what "last season" means for this kind of gear
For most outdoor gear, last season's model is nearly identical to this season's, with a new color and a small tweak. For a few categories, such as running shoes and technical shells, a model change can mean a different fit or fabric. Compare the two versions if you're replacing something you already love.
Rule of thumb: the best clearance buys are proven, well-reviewed items in your size at 40% off or more. A big discount on something you weren't sure about at full price is still something you aren't sure about.
5. Check the return policy for clearance items
Some retailers treat clearance and outlet purchases as final sale, or give a shorter return window. Before buying footwear or anything fit-sensitive, confirm you can send it back if it doesn't work.
